Make a writing schedule

schedule_clipartAnswer the following questions:

  1. When is the deadline for your current writing project?
  2. What is your next project going to be and when will it be due?
  3. When will your next book be published?

If you can’t rattle off the answers to these questions right away or if you don’t have the answers written down somewhere easily accessible, then we’ve got a problem.

As much as you might hate them, the truth is that we need deadlines. Humans love to procrastinate. If we don’t have regular deadlines, then we think of projects as being something for Future You to worry about.

Think back to when you were in school. Could be college, could be high school, whatever. Ever have a homework assignment given to you before a long weekend? When did you finish it? When you first got home? Or the night before school started up after the break?

If you’re like I was, you probably waited until the night before.

Now think back to school again. Did you ever have a big project that had frequent checkpoints that had to be met? What I mean is that the whole project was due at the end of the semester. But there were other aspects your teacher wanted you to turn in earlier. So maybe a few weeks into the semester, you had to have a thesis in mind for your teacher to approve. Then a few weeks after that, you had to have a list of sources to use. A few weeks after that, you needed an outline. A few weeks after that you had to show a rough draft. And so on.

Even though those multiple deadlines may have been annoying, I bet they made that project a lot easier than doing everything in the last week of the semester, didn’t they?

Writing isn’t any different. If you say, “I’ll write this book in three months,” then that sounds great. But three months is a long time. Very easy to procrastinate. It’s a lot harder to procrastinate when you say, “I have to write 2000 words every day.” Now that deadline is a lot closer.

And if you don’t have a release schedule for your books, then you need to sit down and make one up right now. If you say, “I’ll just wait to see what I feel like writing when the time comes,” then that makes it a lot easier to get distracted by other projects. Or to just decide you aren’t going to write at all.

I’ve got my schedule mapped out pretty solidly for the next year or more. I just finished Spear of Destiny, the fourth Myth Hunter novella. Now I’m working on the fourth Luther Cross story, which shouldn’t take me more than a week or so. Then the fourth Infernum novella. Then the third season of Vanguard.

And so on. I’ve got this routine mapped out until I complete the fifth and final Infernum novella, at which point I’ll decide on which of my series ideas I want to tackle next.

The point here is that the schedule helps me keep things in perspective. I’ve found that as I started writing more, I get an influx of ideas. In the year since I started writing daily, I haven’t had writer’s block. And that’s because when you’ve got deadlines, you don’t have the benefit of writer’s block.

So try this. Make a schedule. Take out a piece of paper right this instant (or open up your word processor of choice) and make a list of each project you want to work on. Don’t stop until you run out of projects. Write down every project. If you don’t have a title for the book, then just write a brief descriptor or a series title.

For example, on my list, I have one project just titled “giant robot squad.” That’s not a title, but it’s a quick descriptor of something I had an idea for that I want to do in the future.

Got your list finished? Good, now prioritize. Look at the ones that either have to be completed first or that you’re really passionate about at the moment. Don’t worry, this isn’t set in stone. No one’s going to make sure you adhere to this, it’s just a starting point.

If you have a series in progress (or multiple series), that should be the priority. By that I don’t mean it needs to be the only thing you work on, but you should figure out a way to make it consistent. When I made my list, I had four series in progress: The Myth Hunter, Infernum, Vanguard, and Luther Cross. Now as Luther Cross is through a publisher and has a quarterly release schedule, I don’t have to worry about that so much. Each installment is only 10,000 words and I can knock that out in a week, easy. So that goes further down the list of priorities.

The others, though, were a different story. I had The Myth Hunter and Infernum, both novella series. And I had Vanguard, a serial. So I decided the best thing to do was alternate between them. That way, I’m keeping them consistent for the readers, and also consistent in my mind.

When I made up this schedule, I was only writing 1,000 words per day. I’ve since doubled that. So in theory, I can probably add in some more projects. For example, Spear of Destiny is due to be completed this week, but the release date isn’t until mid-late December. I’ll have the book ready to go long before that date. Still, best to get comfortable in a routine before changing it up.

What does that mean for those other projects? There’s about seven of them in total. Well, for now, I just make a note of them and move on. I know, for example, that Dante, the planned fifth Infernum book, will be the final one in that series. So once that’s done, I’ll look at the other ideas I have and see which one I’m most passionate about (at the moment I believe I have it narrowed down to two, but that could change).

This kind of schedule, as I said, isn’t set in stone. But it acts like a kind of roadmap and helps me keep my priorities straight. If you haven’t done it, it’s worth trying.

Vanguard #6 available now!

Vanguard 006The second season of Vanguard begins right here with Vanguard #6: Freak Island!

In the fallout of the Red Fist’s attack, Vanguard has been disbanded and replaced by an international peacekeeping organization. Shift has tried to return to her old life, but found the transition from superhero back to high school student a difficult one. But when she learns of the existence of an island for specials, she enlists the help of her former teammate, Sharkskin, to investigate. Is this a paradise for specials, or a hell in the making?

Although season 1 was only released on a monthly schedule, I’m pleased to announce that season 2 will be released bi-weekly! That means you’ll only have to wait two weeks to read the next episode in the season!

Vanguard #6, like all the episodes and the complete first season, is only available on Amazon. This also means it’s part of the Kindle Unlimited reading subscription package, so you can read all the episodes as part of your monthly KU fee!

Like it? Review it! Indie authors depend on reviews to help build an audience. So if you enjoy these titles, please take a few minutes after you’re done to leave an honest review on Amazon.

Why I joined Kindle Unlimited

ku

Back when Kindle Unlimited was first announced, I said I wasn’t going to join it. The reasons were that I didn’t like the idea of giving Amazon exclusivity over my content and also because I didn’t like the royalty pay-out of a flat rate per book regardless of the book’s price. Compared to the competing subscription services of Oyster and Scribd (which pay you a percentage of the book’s list price), I didn’t think KU was very healthy.

But that was then and this is now. Amazon has since changed the rules again and now royalties are based on pages read as opposed to a flat rate per book. And some have seen an income drop. But there’s another thing to consider and that’s the performance of my book on the other vendors.

I think it’s great that places like iBooks, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, Smashwords and more are trying to provide some competition for Amazon. But the fact remains that they’re pretty bad at it. The search functionality of those websites makes discoverability all but impossible and there aren’t many promotional opportunities outside of Bookbub.

As much as I don’t like exclusivity, it seems the only way to build an audience these days is with Kindle Unlimited. So I’ve decided to make the plunge. Season two of Vanguard was going to launch in Kindle Unlimited, but now I’ve taken it a step further and added all of season one into the program as well.

If you’re a Kindle Unlimited user, now’s your chance to read the entire series for free!

Writing Fast

images_increasing-productivityStephen King recently wrote an opinion piece for The New York Times entitled “Can A Novelist Be Too Productive?” In it, he addresses the myth by many in the literary community that being a prolific writer equals being a bad writer.

This is one of those myths that just won’t die and I have no idea why it continues to be perpetuated. Think for a minute about the other arts. A person who wants to be a painter is encouraged to paint a lot. A person who wants to be a musician is encouraged to practice every day. But a person who wants to be a writer is told by the literary world that, “it’s quality, not quantity.”

Which is true in a way. Quality is more important than quantity, but like King says in his article, “No one in his or her right mind would argue that quantity guarantees quality, but to suggest that quantity never produces quality strikes me as snobbish, inane and demonstrably untrue.”

When I say it takes me less than a month to write a novella, some people will look at me in horror. Okay, but think about what that entails. Let’s just break down the numbers here. My novellas are 30,000 words and I write 2,000 words a day. 30000 ÷ 2000 = 15. That means if I write 2,000 words a day (and some days it’s usually around 2,500 or more) and if I write five days a week (sometimes six), I can have a novella finished in less than a month.

I think part of the problem is that some like to look at writing as this mystical, esoteric activity where you summon in the muse to work through you or some such bullshit. And it’s nonsense. Writing is just like any other activity—the more you do it, the better and faster you’ll get.

I think there are two things that inspire the mentality that prolific writing is bad. The first is the realities of the traditional publishing industry. It can take a year or more before a novel goes from the author to the bookshelf. But of course this is now being challenged by indie publishing where authors are showing they can put out several well-written, high-quality books within a single year.

The second is just pure, old fashioned snobbery tinged with jealousy. “Look at those prolific writers over there. Clearly they’re only able to write so many words because they don’t care about the quality of those words. I’m a real author, I think carefully and craft my sentences with the utmost care.” Bullshit. I’ve known many “writers” of this kind and I use the scare-quotes because they’re usually the kind of people who spend more time talking about writing than actually writing.

Writing is the only artform there this myth that practice is bad is shoved down the throats of newcomers. It’s why you have creative writing students who spend years tinkering with one novel that will never be finished. I’m a firm believer that you’ll learn a whole lot more about writing if you finish that first book, put it in a drawer for a few months, and then start working on the next.

Vanguard Season 2 coming soon!

vanguard-s02I’m currently working on completing the second season of Vanguard. I’ve been really happy with the response so far to the first season and this series has been a ton of fun to write.

Right now, I’m closing in on the end of the tenth episode, which will be titled Harbinger. On the one hand, this is a pretty self-contained story to end the second season and it won’t be as big as the first season finale, Rise of the Red Fist. But it does set some things in motion that will be pretty big for the rest of the series (at least as far as I have it planned at the moment.

Season 2 is a really interesting experiment. Unlike the first season, the first three episodes will be much more self-contained. For those of you who have completed Season 1, you know that it ends on kind of an interesting note for the team (don’t worry, there won’t be any spoilers for those of you who haven’t gotten to the fifth episode or are waiting on the season compilation).

The first three episodes center on just a few members of the team. #6 deals with Shift and Sharkskin, #7 focuses mainly on Gunsmith with Wraith and Paragon also appearing, and #8 will be all about Colonel Thorne, Zenith, and a new character who was introduced in the first season finale. Episode #9 will see the team coming back together and #10 will spin directly out of the events of that episode.

Just as with the first season, I will be offering a prologue to Season 2 for free to my subscribers. I’m also doing something different with this season. The first season was on a monthly release schedule for a few reasons. One of those was I was worried if I would have the time to have a backlog of material to enable monthly releases throughout the year. Originally I was planning on Season 2 also being on a monthly schedule, but thanks to Chris Fox’s 5000 Words Per Hour, I’ve managed to double my daily writing output. So now I’ll be able to move Vanguard to a bi-weekly release schedule.

As I said, the season is still in production, but Episode #5.5 will be available to my subscribers in September and Episode #6 will come out shortly after that. Subscribers will also be able to pick up the individual episodes at a special release discount price of 99¢ after which the episodes will rise to the $2.99 price, and they will be in Kindle Unlimited at first.

And also, Vanguard: The Complete First Season will come out later this month. It’s going to be released wide on all the platforms, which is why I’m waiting on the KDP Select period for Vanguard #5 to expire before releasing it. So those of you who are on the other platforms and waiting patiently, you’ve only got to wait a little bit longer.

If you want to get on the ground floor and be notified immediately when Vanguard Season 2 starts to come out (as well as get the free prequel episode), you can subscribe to my mailing list. I don’t spam you, I send out at the most two emails or so a month. And you’ll also get special freebies for the entire time you’re on the list.

Here are the covers for the second season. I’m really excited about where this series is going and I hope you’ve all enjoyed it.
